Ont. seniors forced to smoke out in the cold
TORONTO (CP) - There is little sympathy from Premier Dalton McGuinty for Ontario smokers forced out into the cold from their long-term care and nursing homes.
One senior has already died after taking a smoking break outside his long-term care home on Manitoulin Island in below-freezing temperatures. The tobacco-industry sponsored group MyChoice.ca says many seniors have been forced outside in dangerous, icy conditions since the provincewide smoking ban became law last June.
McGuinty says he understands that some long-term care facilities don't have the money to build specially ventilated rooms for smokers.
He says the government had to make some tough choices with its smoking ban, and one of those was to protect workers at nursing homes from second-hand smoke.
Health Minister George Smitherman says the smoking ban also protects the vast majority of seniors living in care who do not smoke.
Mary Ellen Gordon, who owns and operates a seniors home north of Toronto, said she has seen one senior get frostbite while another was caught smoking in bed since the ban took effect, problems she said the home has never had before.
"I can smoke in my home, why can't my seniors smoke in their own homes," Gordon asked at a news conference.
"They live here 365 days a year. I really feel that their rights are being abused."

Yeah well the control freaks invent something if necessary. I was operating a metal fab shop (welding) here and one day an officious fool marched in like he had a warrant and proceeded to search the shop out for butts.
I just went into my office and shut the door. The lads dealt with this little creep....by physically pitching him out.....so I heard from the investigating officer.....
Another time he cut me off with his car, as I was leaving for the day.....like a cop. He then proceeded to write me and the lads up for "smoking in a company vehicle." My personal pickup.....Whoops. We called the man that time.
These anti-smokers and their trumped up "second-hand" smoke have the mentality of the Spanish Inquisition.

How many centuries have the smoker ruled the roost ? Two hundred...three hundred For the most part smokers were a decent bunch who did not blow smoke into anyone's face but some did. The non-smoker rules and todays smoker has to hide away in shame like some leper

For centuries we lacked an empowered left/left which is seeking total control over our lives. The mentality is that if they can get one control, for health reasons they can seek others for political reasons. This KYOTO/AGW thing is just a further manifestation of this..... Yeah!! It really is just a communist plot.

Surly you didn't really expect to continue on smoking where ever you wanted regardless of non-smokers.

Currently there is a move afoot to ban smoking in apartments. The theory is that second hand smoke will infect other units. This is merely a step closer to banning smoking in private cars and other dwellings. Actually, second hand smoke scares the hell out of me......if I quit I could be affected by it. Kim Il Jong is a chain-smoker.....go get him to butt out.

We are living in the 21st century and smoking is an obsolete addiction that one can fight and win against if one has the will to do so.

O.K. ... the way I see it in Retirement/Nursing Homes , that had a government regulated smoking room was .... why remove them when they passed !!!! That's the point .... These people have contributed all there lives and have smoked for much of it ... 80 -90 years old going outside , 9 metres from a doorway to enjoy what simple pleasures they have left.... I figure if they're not dead yet from smoking , that's what not going to kill them....probably slipping or stumbling getting to the smoke pit ... WILL ... This is their home , they pay more rent than you and I and that doesn't matter to McSuinty.... This could of been graduated out as the new health conscious baby boomers move in ....

So! In Iran and Saudi Arabia "honour killings" are legal. That is if your wife or daughter offend you----you may drag them out on the street and shoot them. On slow days they hang homosexuals.....In many parts of the world, slavery is openly practiced..............are you proposing this be adopted here as well. Practice in foreign lands is irrelevant. In many of our elementary schools peanut butter sandwiches are banned......and yet HIV positive pupils are allowed and their statis is secret. Wearing of perfume is enjoined in many schools as well.

...well I work in a Retirement Home if you want to call them that. Day after day I see these people ,smokers and non-smokers . They wake up , go to breakfast , go back to thier 12x12 room and wait for there next meal and repeat this daily routine every day ... the smokers aleast bundle up and lug their walkers over snowbanks to get to the smoke pit ... no money given by the gov't to clear the walkway ...so management doesn't , this smoke pit has no roof or walls for a wind break just a couple of bushes ... The residents phoned the local paper and MP's office but nothing .... Forgotten souls of yester years .... waiting for the grim reaper ....

Well it rained most of the day here , and the poor residents sat on their walkers in the rain to have their puff ... One elderly resident was so mad , he said he was going to smoke in his room , and blow the smoke out his window .. I chuckled , but management saw no humour in it . She said that she would have no choice but to phone the authorities , I can not repeated what He said , but His 1st phone call would be to the papers ... He wanted to have His picture on the front page when He got arrested ... .....You gotta love them ...

Kim Il Jong is a chain-smoker.....go get him to butt out. Trouble with PUFF PIGS is they not only pollute others environments they fail to realized how bad they smell themselves. After a day of the weed the average one has a mouth that smells like my cats litter box. Their cloths are another matter and their mere presence in an elevator is enough to make a person throw up.. I know all this because i used to be a PUFF PIG and I fought for years to maintain acceptance of those who I continually offended. As for banning smoking in apartment,,,, great !!! If they want some help in getting the guts to actually do it they should visit Manila in the Philippines. One area of that city forbids smoking ANYWHERE except your own private home.. That's right no smoking while you walk on the street, no smoking when you are in YOUR car. No smoking period until you actually enter your own home. And they ENFORCE this law with great vigor. As for the old folks who in many cases have been abandoned by their family and put into these lousy nursing homes. Yep I think as the only smoking exception that these folks should have a place to smoke. After 90 years of contributing to the land then being thrown into one of these homes they should be allowed to carry on. As for the rest of the PUFF PIGS,, get some guts and quit ! Real tough talk but perhaps you should mind your own business first before sticking your nose into ours.

I agree here , the Billions collected in taxes from smoking , can the gov't afford to lose that ... think of all the huge sporting events that were sponsored by cigarette companies , some had to cancel because there was no sponsorship $$ .... ..... if the gov't is going to ban anything it should be fat people in spandex...

... ok so your an ex-smoker , congrats ! but why should that effect me !!! I have rights too , BTW legal smoking distance from a entrance is 9 metres . If this is not being followed I suggest to talk to the manager and He can remove those people .. Smoking huts are legal and usually contain a butt can .. as for the smell of smoke on us , o well ... Most women wear way to much perfume , which bothers me to the point of a migraine , so where's my law banning scents ... some places like hospitals and large offices have signs , Scent-Free but it is not law...............

Once again a statement unsupported by truth or logic. Smokers life expectancy is limited according to the same zealots. Early death eliminates many years of pensions, CPP etc. Regardless the terminal health costs are the same.

Once again a statement unsupported by truth or logic. Smokers life expectancy is limited according to the same zealots. Early death eliminates many years of pensions, CPP etc. Regardless the terminal health costs are the same. Another silly post. Bottom Line. Smoking smells. Smoking kills the smoker and those in the same space. Smoking costs the system $$$. Smoking is a minority habit here and in Many other countries. Only the Chinese are silly enough to keep the numbers up. If you smoke you and don't try to quit you are silly. If you can't quit on your own then there is help. Bottom line this anal B.S. which we hear on a regular basis "but I enjoy smoking" is not true. Stop trying to justify your addiction. No one believes you. Just cruising by your board, and saw your interesting conversation. I have to tell you're incorrect in your use of the term "No one". I thought he made some good points. I also question your use of the term "Anal" to describe smokers. Wouldn't that apply more to the Nico-nazi anti-smoking lobby? OK, so one side of this argument says smokers are costing non-smokers money in health care. The other side says not true, they're actually saving you money by dying early, plus there are tax benefits. How is that response "silly"? Makes sense to me.

Well...that's fun. An immediate reply. Out of respect for the courtesy I decided to register to continue the conversation. I think you're going to find you're incorrect on your assessment of the word "anal", as being used in a general sense to refer to sillyity. The term when used in the pejorative sense is a shortening of the term "anal retentive". SourceI can't help noticing anal retentive personalities quite often say things like "everyone" when referring to people who agree with them, and "no one" or "silly" in reference to those who disagree. But back to smoking...I don't smoke, but when I go on break at work I tend to go off with the smokers. I find them more fun and interesting.

I Do however find that many of them enjoy the company of non smoking co-workers because the non smokers who join them are generally more considerate Uh...yeah...that's exactly what I was thinking when I read all you're previous name-calling posts. Now there's a guy who's "considerate".

Funny thing is that this GW thingy has reveiled a lot of skeletons. Second Hand Smoke is closely related to CO2 AGW in that both are political and unfounded by any science. The EPA and WHO both spent a decade financing studies into the matter which concluded that there was no verifiable evidence that second hand smoke was harmful. However because both the EPA and WHO are politically financed, like the IPCC, their announcement was totally unrelated to any genuine science. Indeed the safe limits, set by the EPA, for the toxic substances involved in cigarette smoke would require anywhere from 1000 cigarettes to 10,000 depending on the particular chemical. I shall find a link. try this for starters

THE LAW IS THE LAW? I hope this makes its way around CANADA several times over!!! So if the CANADIAN government determines that it is against the law for the words "God" to be on our money, then, so be it. And if that same government decides that the "Ten Commandments" are not to be used in or on a government installation, then, so be it. And since they already have prohibited any prayer in the schools, on which they deem their authority, then so be it. I say, "so be it," because I would like to be a law abiding Canadian citizen. I say, "so be it," because I would like to think that smarter people than I are in positions to make good decisions. I would like to think that those people have the Canadian Public's best interests at heart. BUT, YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I'D LIKE? Since we can't pray to God, can't Trust in God and cannot post His Commandments in Government buildings, I don't believe the Government and its employees should participate in the Easter and Christmas.... celebrations which honor the God that our government is eliminating from many facets of Canadian life. I'd like my mail delivered on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter. After all, it's just another day. I'd like our Government to be in session on Christmas, Good Friday,Thanksgiving & Easter as well as Sundays. After all, it's just another day. I'd like ALL Representatives to not have to worry about getting home for the"Christmas Break." After all ~~~it's just another day. I'm thinking that a lot of my taxpayer dollars could be saved, if all government offices & services would work on Christmas, Good Friday & Easter. It shouldn't cost any overtime since those would be just like any other day of the week to a government that is trying to be "politically correct." In fact.... I think that our government should work on Sundays (initially set aside for worshipping God...) because, after all, our government says that it should be just another day.... What do you all think?

I was reading some UN stats/studies a while back that appear to link longevity with poverty and smoking. They also yilded some anomolies. Spain and Japan are the global leaders in longevity. Spain and Japan lead in the world for adults who smoke at least once per day....approx 60%.
