What is a good way to learn the japanese language?

I've been downloading podcasts for lessons and looking online for meanings but it just doesn't seem to stick. What is another way to learn the language correctly, without worrying about wrong translations or any fees that can come with a program? I've been told anime is a no-go for learning. What should I do?
