7 billion bucks is a lot of scratch, but I like this idea of Canadian Ice breakers to patrol the Arctic. Anybody hate it? www.chroniclejournal.com/CP_stories.php?id=52935And Damn...yeah I spelled Canadian wrong in the title. You'll settle for Oops right?

Currently, the ships planned are not ice-breakers but are "strengthened frigates". Icebreakers on the plan of the 1943 USCG icebreakers would be more suitable. 4 5" guns are capable of generating respect.
The first purpose built ice-breakers deployed to Greenland with the USCG in 1943. Germans had been attempting to set up weather stations and had landed one party prior to getting froze in. The ice-breakers carried sea planes which located the landed party and the one ice-breaker drove through the sea-ice to capture them and then the two located the German trawler and went and captured it. This occured in the winter north of 70. Temperature records from Greenland indicate that 1941 was it's warmest year but the sea ice was extensive.
