Girls find landmine

STRATHROY -- A country creek where children swim, fish and frolic was instead swarmed by police yesterday as Canadian Forces explosives experts detonated two live landmines.

The mines, found in a culvert that runs under Inadale Drive between Strathroy and Mt. Brydges, appeared to have timers and were likely the type used to blow up tanks, Strathroy-Caradoc police say.

One mine was discovered by two girls Friday. They called police, and a second mine was found yesterday morning, only one metre away from the first.

The creek is popular with families, so police suspect the mines were put there to maim and kill, or in callous disregard of that possibility.

The force of the blast ripped bark and limbs from a tree and sprayed water so high it could be seen by observers a kilometre away.

Landmines no accident, experts say

It appears someone likely rigged and deliberately placed landmines in a country creek outside of London, experts and authorities say.

Anti-tank mines that are filled with explosive material -- as is suspected with the two found between Strathroy and Mt. Brydges -- weigh a couple of kilograms, Bill Rawling, a former Canadian Forces reservist and military historian, said yesterday.
"They don't float," Rawling said yesterday.

Rawling trained to disarm mines as a reservist and later published a book on the history of field engineers in the Canadian Armed Forces.

But until this weekend he had never heard of an anti-tank mine that had a timing device -- police say the military explosive experts who detonated the landmines found debris consistent with a timer.

"I've never seen or heard of that before," said Rawling, of Ottawa. "That's usually a sign that it's an improvised device."

Police agree with his suspicion
It seems unlikely a landmine could go missing from the arsenal of the Canadian Armed Forces without drawing scrutiny, Rawling said,
"There would be an investigation on the spot," he said.

...ok... so I haven't seen a " live " landmine , BUT I have seen live hand grenades .. on top of a mantel for all to see along with some shells that were about a foot high and 5 " in diameter ... says his grandfather bought them back from WWII . The house was full of stuff sitting out to view.

5 days in the big city getting a more realistic look at real life and 2 days in the north to relax.

... maybe they have a idea who did it , and want to make sure they can catch them . Perps tend to stick around if they aren't hunted .

... but the 2 previous articles stated otherwise .... don't come down on me for correctly posting a source and cut/paste quotes from it . After-all that is the rules of Pro-Boards and you know it ...

Yep it's the place where over 3 million people live and work to get money to pay taxes so there are nice 4 lane roads up to cottage land. And of course the nice imported foods you buy go through the food terminal in toronto because it would be to expensive to ship the stuff directly up to cottage land.

Trouble is for most of the Loathed ignorant people in T.O. they cannot afford to live amoungst the trees and deer because they have to work. Tell me, for the average person,where are the 30 to 40 k per year jobs complete with benefits etc up in north land? Sure there may be some exceptions but there aren't many of them.

I am sure there are lots of 50 ish people who would love to sit on their tails in Muskoka and punch a keyboard all day but they can't because they have to keep the engine of Ontario Humming so you lazy people can play all day.

And by the way when you get really sick in the North where do you go to have it taken care of ?? Don't tell me up there because it does not happen. It only happens in T.O. and you cost the system one sh,tload of $ to keep you health up there.

Actually we in the south don't have much use for the ignorant hicks of the north country so in the end we are all even.

.... as with any big city the cost of living is much higher ... wages have to be higher in order to survive ... as for good jobs up north ... plenty , just change the attitude and there yours ...

.. you know good jobs are out there if the person is willing to work ..forestry , mining , industrial sector and even in the tourist Industry .. some are only seasonal but pay well .. but alot of people are not willing to do the grunt jobs or get dirty . They want their cooshie office jobs and the night life that follows . That's o.k. for some , but not others .
