Stretch of Ont. highway renamed to honour soldiers killed in AfghanistanTORONTO (CP) - A stretch of Ontario highway that's become a sombre repatriation route for soldiers felled in Afghanistan, drawing impromptu gatherings of mourners saluting that sacrifice, was officially renamed in their honour on Friday. A 170-kilometre stretch of Highway 401 between the eastern Ontario airbase where the flag-drapped coffins of fallen soldiers arrive and the forensics centre in Toronto that receives them has been dubbed the Highway of Heroes. The name change was prompted by an electronic petition to officially rename that stretch of highway. James Forbes, 22, was behind the petition and has said he was surprised it got so much attention. Forbes, a London, Ont., resident, said last month he received a lot of feedback from military families who've travelled along Highway 401 following repatriation ceremonies at CFB Trenton. Since the mission began in 2002, 70 Canadian soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan. cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2007/09/07/4478506-cp.html... One point I'd like to make here , it should be for everyone that has ever fought / served to make Canada the best in the world to live .

It saddens me to read this post. Article 5---an attack on one is an attack on all.
Canada/US relations are generally means attached at the hip. More canadians fought in the US civil war on both sides than fought in the War of 1812. US volunteers flowed across to join the CF in WW1 prior to 1917 and again in WW2. More Canadians enlisted in the US forces than deserters/dodgers came north. I happen to be one of them. I also earned the right to wear the "kepi blanc".
Bush was right on the money when he announced:
"Today freedom was attacked."
Freedom cannot be bought but can only be rented----the rent regrettably is in blood. I can identify with your pleasure at your kid failing the medical......indeed more than you could possibly ever grasp.

When people went to war in particular World War II it was all over well defined sociopathic bad guys and demagoges who for the sake of their ambitions harnessed their countries to go into other countries to enslave their resources and their peoples by force killing as they wanted to, to make the takeover total. Since then it really has not stopped but taken halting breaths between travesties where now it is corporations and their friends are calling the shots on various countries foreign policies to do the same thing on a corporate plane where it was people Stalin, Hitler, Mosilinni doing it before. These corporations are multi-national whether they be the banking sector, oil, steel or arms. When I think of that highway or heroes all I can think of is the waste of human life and the grief and loss Canadian families suffered for the Afgan war to nowhere and nothing. War on terror? More like Bush's war for corporate moneymaking and that is it!

After reading all about what goes on with our aborigianl peoples in particular the Selkirk - Peguis First Nations scandal where it is really quite clear that whiteman stole their land and then enacted Parliamentary laws to legalize the theft leaving the First Nations to beg and negotiate to get a fair settlement afterward, years and years afterward what goes on in Afganistan and our participation and money spending there is an obscenity that makes me say we don't have a highway of heros in Canada for our deceased military men killed overseas it more like a Highway of Suckers who should have been fixing things here and certainly not there.

Since this thread started...our losses have doubled but....as far as the "Highway of Heros"...This is now been publicized here, in the US and Europe....and we are the envy of the folk.......however not by those who haven't accepted losing the Cold War. These are those who are scratching their collective heads----trying to figure out the motive behind the recent Fort Hood terrorisy attack. The real question is how to engage the co-operation of "moderate" muslims and to divine realistically if they do actually exist----which I doubt....
