T'was the night before Christmas, He lived all alone, In a one bedroom house, Made of plaster and stone. I had come down the chimney, With presents to give, And to see just who, In this home did live. Β I looked all about, A strange sight I did see, No tinsel, no presents, Not even a tree. Β No stocking by the mantle, Just boots filled with sand, On the wall hung pictures, Of far distant lands. Β With medals and badges, Awards of all kinds, A sober thought, Came through my mind. Β For this house was different, It was dark and dreary, I found the home of a soldier, Once I could see clearly. Β The soldier lay sleeping, Silent, alone, Curled up on the floor, In this one bedroom home. Β The face was so gentle, The room in such disorder, Not how I pictured, A Canadian soldier. Β Was this the hero, Of whom I'd just read?, Curled up on a poncho, The floor for a bed? Β I realized the families, That I saw this night, Owed their lives to these soldiers, Who were willing to fight.
Soon round the world, The children would play, And grownups would celebrate, A bright ChristmasDay. Β They all enjoyed freedom, Each month of the year, Because of the soldiers, Like the one lying here. Β I couldn't help wonder, How many lay alone, On a cold Christmas Eve, In a land far from home. Β The very thought brought A tear to my eye, I dropped to my knees, And started to cry. Β The soldier awakened, And I heard a rough voice, "Santa, don't cry. This life is my choice. Β I fight for freedom, I don't ask for more, My life is my God, My country, my corps." Β The soldier rolled over, And drifted to sleep, I couldn't control it, I continued to weep. Β I kept watch for hours, So silent and still, And we both shivered, From the cold night's chill. Β I didn't want to leave, On that cold, dark night, This guardian of honour, So willing to fight. Β Then the soldier rolled over, With a voice, soft and pure, Whispered, "Carry on Santa, It's Christmas Day, all is secure." Β One look at my watch, And I knew he was right, "Merry Christmas my friend, And to all a good night." Β Β
This poem was written by a peace keeping soldier stationed overseas. Β The following is his request. I think it is reasonable. Β Β PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favour of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our Canadian service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves Β for us. Β Please, do your small part to plant this small seed. Β

Perhaps I am somewhat bitter but what the hell---nobody likes a whiner...
We the willing have done some much for so long with so littile for the ungrateful, that we can now do anything with nothing. I can speak for most...we didn't think of you when we did our thing. Our first loyalty was to our buds, our platoon......for them we would die....not for you. If this offends....tough sh*t....you shoulda locked up the hippies that spat on us and called us baby-killers.
Courage is rightly called this first of virtues because it guarantees all others. Winston S. Churchill

... it is easy to say , as we sit in our heated/sheltered homes with good hot meals and watch our T.V.s . Our families are safe , happy and can enjoy each other every day . But so many forget this , and take everything for granted .. Thankfully we never know the horrors the war , and the brave women/men of the military , past and present are to be Thanked for this . MERRY CHRISTMAS and God Bless .

My wife wears red for you guys every Friday. Both of us are of the consensus that to do everything right the military needs to bump off the Afgan warlords, create growers coops for the poppy trade and get the UN to declare the country as the world's suppliers of pain killer base for medical use and then nationalize the thieving drug companys to make it so. Then the earth will prosper and the Afgans shall share in that prosperity.

One of the many remarks made is its better to fight there than here on our soil.

I don't know why we are there other than our commitment to NATO. I was just stating that reason because its the one we hear the most from everyone and not just the Americans. Our presence there will never change anything for them. They will always be sitting on their dung pile letting other countries fight for them. When NATO leaves everything will revert back to the stone age again for them. Why we are there trying to drag them kicking and screaming into the 21 century is beyond me. The sooner Canadians leave the better for me.

The Americans have indeed opened up a Pandora's Box.

The Americans have indeed opened up a Pandora's Box. The Taliban opened the box, the Americans just did a lousy job of trying to close it.
