Looks like the French are stepping up to the plate to help out our Canadian Forces in Afghanistan. Now if the rest of NATO can just grow a spine ??

Nothing has basically changed on this earth in the previous 5,000 years of recorded history. Take away the thin veneers humankind has cocooned itself in to reassure itself that it has become enlightened and civilized and you will find its a very short way back to the jungle with our ways of life where its always been and still very much a dog eat dog world.

I'm glad to see them stepping up to the plate instead of hiding behind it.

The French have been very active interventionists in Africa....for many decades.... The French export trade in weapons and weapon systems for many decades has been one of their major industries........

FRANCE ANNOUNCES TROOP DEPLOYMENT
PARIS,FRANCE- President Jacques Chirac announced today that France would be deploying two elite units of French troops to Iraq in the event of war. Five hundred crack troops from the 2nd Groupement d'Instruction en Abandonment (2nd Surrender Instruction Group) are mobilizing to assist the Iraqi Army in the finer points of military surrender. "The immediate capitulation of an armed force is a delicate and intricate tactic in which we French have much experience." said Defense Ministry spokesperson General de Armee Francois-Phillippe Hommes de Petit-Pommes. "There is a certain protocol in laying down your arms or fleeing the battlefield. To wave the white flag while remaining arrogant, pompous and insufferable requires experience and training. The French Army believes it is second to none in the fine art of surrendering quickly. The record of our armed forces in that area speaks for itself. The Iraqi performance in giving up without a fight during the last Gulf War was commendable but slip-shod. We hope to improve their level of surrender execution for the next war." General Hommes de Petit-Pommes further announced that 1000 advisors from the Regiment de Collaborateurs Francais will also be dispatched to Iraq to assist the Iraqi people in colloborating effectively with any occupation force. "It is more important to protect their art treasures and dining establishments than to defend their honor," the General pointed out. The General also expressed the hope that Baghdad has some tree-lined boulevards. "It was our experience that the Germans liked to march in the shade, and we feel the Americans and the British might like that same measure of comfort in Iraq -- especially as warm weather settles in this spring."

Snoopy that post was not just offensive but highly inaccurate. Years past France deployed a Legion battalion to Chad and drew a line in the sand. Libyan military crossed the line and within two weeks Chad was Libyan free. Even applying that defeatist lable to the Italians is currently inaccurate. In the chaos during the implosion of the USSR, Albania was plunged into anarchy----a small contingeant of Italian Bersigliari were landed in Albania and immediately order was restored before they reached Tiriana(the capital). WW2 military performance (or lack thereof) was more a product of defective/inefficient governments in Italy and France. Currently these two countries field very efficient, well equiped, well motivated, well trained proffesional military forces.

The current German forces, and their current populations, reflect more the poorly motivated WW2 French and Italian forces and their populations' attitudes.

Within the last 36 hours Pirates off Africa have had mixed success. They succeeded inseizing a Saudi Super Tanker and gaining the ire of saudi arabia. An Indian frigate encountered a suspected pirate "mothership" in the Gulf of Aden. When challenged to stop for a search/inspection the pirates threatened to destroy the fragate, and when the frigate drew close opened fire...........
Darwin award.....
The Indians do not report taking any prisoners.......

The French and all the old colonialists were at Dien Bein Phu too and look what happened there afterward?
I feel sorry for everyone there because with even all the interventions nothing will change. Let us make sure we do not import nor should they be allowed to export their culture, laws and ways of life here because that is shipping their problems to another place that has problems of their own without compounding them by allowing more in from somewhere else. That is not being an isolationist but a realist. Resolving problems in their lands is their problem where we can only foster change to the better without torture, murder or outright genocide.

Don't refer tp Dien Bien Phu unless you are thoroughly familiar with that battle and aftermath. General Giap's success lied in his ability to "put a lid on" Dien Bien Phu. The french lacked the assets to resupply their forces effectively by air or support them. When Giap reduced the outposts the result was obtained. Later Giap attempted to apply his formula to Khe Sahn and got a bloodly nose for his efforts and provided the US defenders with a killing ground to reduce his resources by attrition. The neccessary men and material assemeled to attack Khe Sahn just provided a worth while target for tactical and strategic bombing. The ability to at all times the base and evacuate casualties largely resulting in Giap having to withdraw with a massive loss of face as well as men and materiel. A amusing sidenote.....the battle was drawn out by the US military happilly allowing the western press to enthusiastically predict a Dien Bien Phu disaster---encouraging the NVA to pour more men and materiel into the meat grinder. Khe Sahn never realized it's initial goal---interdicting the Ho Chi Minh trail but served well to cripple the NVA's offensive ability for years.

What was going on in Indo China by the colonial powers of that era is the same stuff that was going on in so many centuries of previous conflicts by colonial powers before they ever got to Vietnam. I am talking about thousands of years of it now in terms of recorded history. It was all about money, power and profit and ideology was only a front for the 3 things already going on behind the scenes since time began - money, power and profits and none of that has changed even today and its now 2009! Please tell me its any different?

One thing that is lost here is that in these countries that were under the colonial powers and then the communists the one thing that was forgotten in all the fighting and bombing was that the basic things every ordinary person wanted, being food, shelter and happiness were the very things others wanted to blow to kingdom come with their bombs. The ends there justified the means to those willing to blow each other up. What a hell of a thing to do to each other!

Just to show you how nutz the world can be about races and their traits I am just into reading a book titled The Rise of the Fourth Reich by Jim Marrs. Within that book is a section on psychiatry where during a period of time in the professions development there was a works called The Psychical Degeneration of the French People that simply left the reader with the broad impression that simply being French constituted a mental illness! Fast forward and these people the French suckered the American people to take their place after Dien Bien Phue. Just who had the diminished mental capacity here as it seems everyone lost it!
