The ever escalting cost of saving or locating jobs in the automtive sector has escaled from a couple of hundred thousand dollars in the 1980s, half a million in the 1990s and now 1.4 million in the new millenium. It would be cheaper to golden handshake all GM and Chrysler employees and let the companys be liquidated freeing new enterprise, rewarding Ford and Toyota etc. Hydia etc. for doing a good job and watch the multiplier effect take over on what the buyout money will buy from the ground up. Such generous buyouts would get Concervatives votes in Ontario giving thme a crack at a majority without Quebec. Doing this any other way is punishing Ford and others. When is the taxpayer dollar going to stop subsidizing companies in general and why the ones who run their business into the ground all the while paying their top management bonuses!
Its a no brainer, let these companies fail and rid ther canadian taxpayer of theri pestilence.

Actually it likely would have been much wiser for the Canadian Government to have stood aside. The Democratic Parties facist takeover of Chrysler and GM is not going well there. What most forget is the Chryler and GM in Canada depend most upon is the export market to the US and popularity in the US influences Canadian domestic sales. Already GM is referred to as "Government Motors" and the partisan closing of dealerships (closing dealerships which supported Republicans) is not helping. Canada has a long unhappy experience with Crown Corporations and now this experience will be repeated in the US with the smothering control of government in the auto manufacturing sector. Nearby we have a new Toyota plant making Rav4's operating at half capacity......very ready to take up the slack......

The rationalization that our Parliamentarians use is that the bailout amounts to a giveaway of some $23.00 for every man, woman and child in Canada. They were quite sure that Canadians would not go on tax revolt for the cost of a case of beer bought once eventhough each bailed out job cost 1.4 million and the labour content cost per vehicle amounts to about 10% to 11%!
At 10 to 11% being the labour cost realisticly how could it be said that unions priced themselves out of the labour market?
What happened in the North American auto industry in connection with Chrysler and GM is straight bad management and that is all it is 100% of it. Taxpayers are then asked to bail out bad management! That is truly corporate welfare.

Their union did not price them out of a job. Statistics gahered show that pay mad benefits only occupy about 11% of the cost of automotive and small truck production costs. The rest is infrastructure, distribution and margins for profits etc. It would have been cheaper and had a larger economic dollar value multiplier effect to have bought out each worker with a golden handshake letting GM and Chrysler go where that would have rewarded the other companies for industry management well done as in Ford and the other offshore companies that also assemble whole cars in North America, in Canada. What the Harper PCs did was reward bad mamangement who bonused themselves anyway dring their companies into the ground with your tax dollar in a bailout loan system the taxpayer will never get back. LIke in the USA bailing out Wall Street that caused the mess leaving mainstreet paying for it that is exactly what Harper's PCs did for the auto industry. All MP's only concern was if the amount it cost the taxpayer at $23.00 a person in Canada with 33 million people was if it would cause a tax revolt? That was the the driving thought first and foremost so the bailout happened with mainstreet Canada paying the tab.
Meanwhile the PCs gave record profit making sectors a 5 billion dollar tax break to business all the while sectors in Canada from children sleeping in the streets, child poverty, jobs being outsourced to other low wage countries, aboriginal issues and ever manner of street issues went begging. Special Interests in Canada seem to get everything while these asses in Parliament are only concerned about gaing majority power in any election that can be generated to get them their that is pissing off more and more Canadians who have national priorities straight and being made vindictive are going to return save governments to Ottawa for Canadians as "Minoirty Governments" to protect these poltical parties from themselves and from Canadians who are having a hard time stomaching their stink.
