What is the best way to learn sign language?

1) I've learnt some of the alphabets through some tutorials from youtube, and my question is do we use an alphabet in the beginning to describe something that we want to tell others?
eg: do we use the peace gesture ( to describe 'V' ) when we are trying to tell about a 'vase'?
