Here's a little brain test that should drive you insane if you spend enough time on it...I know *I* can't figure it out yet!
Three men walk in to a hotel room for the night.
The bellboy tells them the rooms are $30/night. They agree to share one room, and each pay $10. $10X3=$30
After they are shown to their rooms, the manager comes out to the desk and asks what's going on. The bellboy tells him that he just rented a room to 3 guys for $30. The manager tells the bellboy that was wrong to do because it is a holiday and the rates are discounted. The room is only $25.
So he tells the bellboy to take $5 back to the three guys. The bellboy takes $5 from the register and heads up to the guys' room to give it to them, but, being sneaky, he realizes that the guys don't know that the room is $25. As far as they know it's $30.
But he realizes he should give them something, and decides to give them $3 back and keep the other $2 for himself. $3+$2=$5.
He figures the guys will never know. So he knocks on the door of their room and gives each guy $1 back. Now, each guy has paid $9. (They each paid $10 initially, then got a dollar back). So the question is : If each guy paid $9 for the room for a total of $27, and that sneaky bellboy kept $2, what happened to the other dollar? $27+$2=$29...As you know, the story started with $30.

www.debtsmart.com/column/sample05.htmlNothing happened to the dollar. All the money is still there. Yes, they each ended up paying $9 each for a total of $27. Plus the $3 they got back is a total of $30-it's all there. They were supposed to pay $25 but they paid $27, which makes sense because the bellhop kept $2. Charges: $25 for the room + $2 for the bellhop=$27 $30 initial charge - $3 refund = $27 Each paid $9 and $9 x 3 = $27 The trick is in the statement, "The three men had now paid $9 each, or a total of $27. This plus the $2 the bellhop kept for himself makes a total of $29." The $27 is the total payment and $2 is a cost, not a payment! It just happens to add up to $29 giving the illusion of a missing dollar.
